Nose Surgery

Nose Surgery - (Rhinoplasty)

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, is one of the most exacting operations done with aesthetic surgery. Because the nose usually is the very focus of the face, thus always being noticed -- by the patient as well as by other people, its reshaping, reduction, or increase in size frequently changes the general expression of the face.

Another intent of this procedure is to improve problems with nasal function, such as breathing, aesthetic function and psychology, considerably freeing the patient of any complexes and enhancing his/her spiritual harmony.

Before making any decision, it is highly recommended to arrange for a personal consultation with an experienced, licensed plastic surgeon. It is essential to address all and any issues related to the nose shape, size and type, breathing, particularly motives or psychological reasons for the surgery. A good state of health is a natural prerequisite.

The optimal age range for rhinoplasty is after the completion of adolescence (girls between 16-17 years of age, boys from the age of 18) to approx. 30 years of age. It is not only the aspect of healing, having sufficient elasticity and tissue adaptability, but also the psychological aspect.

Operation

The operation is performed under local anaesthesia; however, general anesthesia can be used if requested. The surgery is done by an internal method, through the nostrils. During the surgery, the soft parts of the nose, cartilage and bones, are loosened and reshaped. The operation is completed with the adhesive plaster and plaster fixation to the nose with nasal tampons inserted into the nostrils. With the nostrils filled, the patient must breathe through the mouth and the mouth mucosa gets dry quickly, therefore it is necessary to drink more frequently.

Temporary eyelid swelling and bruising are common side effects of the surgery. Cold compresses will reduce the swelling.

Postoperative Period

Patients stay at the clinic overnight and are usually released the following morning. It is recommended to rest well for several days; the tampons will be removed on the 3rd day. The nostrils should be kept clean; we recommend to use cotton brushes every 2 to 3 hours. The sutures are removed between the seventh to tenth day after the surgery. Between days 17 to 21, the plaster splint is removed and worn only at night for another 10 to 14 days.
